Planet Word is a free museum at 13th and K Street NW in Washington, DC, committed to “inspiring and renewing a love of words, language, and literacy.”
I recently completed what may have been my favorite project yet with the museum, a reading program called “Literacy Liftoff.”
Planet Word’s Education Team describe the program as a tool to “build confidence, strengthen reading skills, and spark a lifelong love for books.”
This summer, second and third grade readers will engage with ten titles as well as a companion reading guide complete with fun activities to aid them in shooting for the stars.
For the effort, I created a space themed logo paired with the cartoonish typeface “Rumplestiltskin.” The logo, a rocket ship launching from an open book was adapted into a badge, embroidered on backpacks for the readers as well as other products.
For the Reader’s Guide, I created playful illustrations and icons to accompany the content, including word scrambles, word searches and puzzles.
Wishing the children a summer full of stories, great memories and success!
